Invasive cattails provide clean energy, educational opportunity at UWO

A couple miles from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, a marsh owned by the University is filled with cattails—cattails that need to be removed to open up the marsh and allow for plants to grow and habitats to thrive.

Back on campus, the cattails are creating energy by acting as dry biomass for the University’s dry fermentation anaerobic biodigester–a first in the Americas biogas facility that turns waste into energy.  Read full article here.

Oshkosh, Wisconsin: University AD Plant Boosts Revenues With Compost, Heat Sales

By producing compost from its digestate, collecting tipping fees and expanding use of its thermal heat, the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh (UWO) expects to maximize the revenue potential of its industrial-scale dry fermentation anaerobic digester (AD) that began operating in 2011. In late July, UWO launched Titan Gold, an OMRI-certified organic compost product that is approved by the US Composting Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance program.  Read full article here.

Congratulations to UW-Oshkosh for being named to the number three spot on Sierra magazine’s (Sierra Club) list of the top environmentally-oriented schools in the country.  Sierra credits UWO with conserving energy, operating a biodigester and enforcing recycling, among other green initiatives.
